I keep hearing rumors of people hiding at the gate and throwing things to scare people off. Has anyone actually seen people doing this or is it just another rumor? I only ask because I go frequently and have never seen anyone doing this. I seriously doubt anyone would go every night and sit up on the hill by the gate waiting to throw a rock at some hikers / bikers / birdwatchers / ghost hunters / cult members / whatever.

I've seen a big group of teenagers in a drunken stupor at the gate numerous times that did throw rocks at me and my group and there were more people hiding in bushes further along that jumped out and screamed at us. Mind you I've only gone at night around one or two in the morning.

Next time someone gets a group together, I'd love to come along...I've never been through Blackstar at night. I do believe there are stupid people (tweekers, drunk kids) with nothing better to do but scare people off. I grew up in Silverado and I remember when my little brother and the other little canyon rats would get in their camo gear and hide up in the trees at the end of Silverado just to scare flatlanders. The boys would mimick mountain lions to scare people and then steal their beer or whatever they left behind.

I must admit I have done that in the past. But it got boring and I decided to help people out by touring with them through the canyon.

When walking out of the canyon with two people, we saw a large group of teens carrying beers and other bottles. They had a night-vision video camera and pointed it at us and started asking us questions. We just kept walking past and stopped and watched them walking.
Thinking back, I guess we must've looked a little strange, dressed in black and staring, but they were being rude.

I've never had rocks thrown at my car or myself in Blackstar Canyon, but in the neighboring canyon where I live, it happens all the time. I don't know why people think it's funny; it really sucks to have rocks thrown at your car.
