Has anyone encountered any squatters here? Also, i have been hearing that OC Sheriffs have been telling people to not go into the canyons at night, is this correct?

I've been many times and never seen the squatters. The Sheriff and parks service do advice against going out there at night but both admit it is legal.

Why whats wrong with going there at night? Is it true that if something happens up there law enforcement will not respond?

Ive seen the 'Squatter Camp' a lil deep within the canyon. they have their little space of land filled with farm animals such as chickens and goose. U can try getting up close for a better view of the camp but you have to go over the "No Tresspasing" Fence which i dont recommend. I heard the owner isent really friendly...

.....And hes packin

FYI two friends and I went up Black Star Canyon road at about 2 a.m. last night. By 3 a.m. we had reached the abandoned bus (pretty cool) and then we kept walking (past a 'private road' sign that was really weird) and eventually saw lights. I'd say the lights are not even a quarter of a mile from the abandoned bus.

When we stopped and started identifying multiple lights through the trees we noticed that we could hear SOME DUDE SNORING. We had a night vision goggle thing with us and we tried to identify the surroundings but we couldn't figure out what exactly the lights were or how far they were or what they were attached to. The fact that we could hear a dude snoring convinced us that shining my super-bright $30 LED flash light wouldn't be a good idea. Didn't want to wake anyone up.

We hung around trying to figure out what the camp looked like until the snoring stopped and then we quietly walked back to the area where the bus is and then walked out of there.

There are definitely people living out there. Do not go pass the abandoned bus at night.

For those thinking this might be fun and creepy: it's just a big rocky road that is dark and randomly windy at night. You'll end up walking 6 miles and all you'll see is a gutted bus. No ghosts, no goblins, and at the end of the road there's a camp of some people.

Save your time! Go during the day, it's probably much more scenic and fun to walk.

P.S. I also got a PARKING TICKET for $30 that said no parking between 10pm and 3am. So if you go up there, be aware, someone does check out who's parked out there.

yesterday I was on the road walking and one squatter wearing a blk hat, shirt and jeans came at me with a pistol and I pulled out my maglite and Ka-Bar marine corps fighting knife and staged to defend myself. We were in a stalemate and I shouted at him. In return he stared blank faced with a gun. good times

I've been told once not to go in at night by the cops. I'll never forget the look on the guy's face when he told us how dangerous the place is at night. He said and I quote:
"There's a lot of wierd things that go on in there at night."[b]

Have you ever heard of Turnbull Canyon in Hacienda Heights/Whittier, CA?

Its much like blackstar and there are many rumors and myths surrounding the place. However, about 5-7 years ago a girl was murdered there and her body was dragged for about 3-5 miles.

There was a lot of weird stuff surrounding her murder and if you do research im sure you will find news articles and what not. Till this day, the murder remains unsolved.

Someone I had talked to had mentioned that there were members of the prominent members of society in that were involved in cults and did rituals up in the canyons. I dont know if thats true or not but thats what I heard.

Maybe the Police officer that told you not to go up there might have been referring to such activities. I am sure they know certain things that they are not allowed to say.

hmmm....makes you wonder.

blackstar is legal to visit at night but you will get a "street sweeping" ticket... parked in dirt... its just to try and get you to stay out... however turnbull canyon scares even me... i went there once and i saw plend of dead animals... no flat ones from tires, just dead... they have since put up a fence like youd find in prison, its a chain link fence laced with razor wire... its right in front of the "gates of hell." i'm never going up there again. if you have questions about either place though you can e-mail me. timothypigeon@aol.com

I used to go out there with friends many years ago (mid 1990's - early 2000's)

The only really disturbing situation we encountered was the last time I went. It went down like this:
It's after dark (around 10ish) and we're parked at the entrance in the dirt area, getting ready to get out of the car to enjoy the creepy ambiance.
There is another car load of young people parked not too far behind us, drinking and smoking pot and god knows what else.
Anyway...
This big white pickup truck comes up the road to the gate. Inside is a big, scary, redneck looking guy. There is a fully decked out gun rack in the truck and young girl (maybe 12 or so) in the passenger's seat.
The redneck fella gets out of the car and looks at us, considering us for a minute, before pulling a big keyring out of his pocket and walking over to the gate. He unlocks the Black Star Canyon entrance gate, pulls the truck through, then re-locks the gate. He drove away into the darkness.

The rest of us, pot smoking car included, decide it's not a good idea to go back there, and we drove away instead.

This will explain why you guys encounter random cars back there. Some folks have keys.

I hiked it with 3 friends at midnight, no lights except for the moon. We were all pretty serious and trying to be as covert as possible. We hiked past the mini golf course and up the switchbacks a ways to get an aerial view of the abandoned stuff. The lights you see are merely security lights for the tuttles land. We didn't see any evidence of human habitation or any suspicious activity.
Another trip, in december, my friends and I were walking back to the car from hiking to the waterfalls. It was about 4:30 PM and the sun had just set. A pickup drove past us coming from inside the canyon and stopped in front of the main gate. we were about 500m from the gate and truck and walking towards it. Soon we saw something in the dark and realized it was an old fat guy with a huge white beard who we assumed was art tuttle. We were all ready to defend oursleves with knives and we could tell there was another pickup behind the gate (possibly containing hillbillys about to jump us). The guy proceded to lecture us about private property, said we had "been places we should not have been", and pointed to the "PRIVATE ROAD" markings spray painted on the ground. I proceeded to tell him that we were on County and National forest land the entire time, and that the PRIVATE ROAD sign was fake and created by squatters. He then said something useless and turned around and left. He opened the gate and drove away, but the other pickup remained around the corner. We finally exited through the gate, scared as fuck of a gang of hillbillies in the truck, we headed to the car. As we passed the truck, it turned out to be a bunch of partying teenagers who were more scared than we were!

Turnbull ain't haunted, there are some satanic cults though, we found many decapitated cats and some dogs. Now the crime about the girl that was murder up in the canyon, technically she was murdered in the canyon. They killed her on Skyline Dr. and Turnbull Canyon Rd. Then they dragged her body until the dumped her on Hacienda Heights Ave.

There was also another murdered, when a gangster was killed by rivals and dumped into one of ravines about a mile before the skyline rd. and turnbull canyon rd. intersection.
