I went hiking to Blackstar Canyon Falls a couple Saturdays ago and ran into Art on the way in and way out. My first encounter on the way in he was grumbling and complaining he had just cleaned up grafitti from the night before. I tried not to engage him and said "have a nice day". On the way back he was stopped on the road speaking with an older gentleman who had been walking the road and does so regulary. Art mostly complained about all the trash left out there and I also noticed he was no longer wearing the neck brace he had on that morning. I spoke with him about the area and his history out there. The other gentleman asked where my friend and I had been to that day and I told him the falls. Art started going on about I need permission to go there and the dangers of going there as well. I told him I disagreed about the falls being on private property and before the discussion got going to much I quickly changed the subject to the trash on the road. After a few minutes I told him and the other guy to have a nice day and was on my way. Walking back down the road in the afternoon I was amazed at how many beer bottles, cans, water bottles, and energy drink bottles I came across that were not there in the morning. I could only hold a few so next time I go back I will definitely bring a trash bag with me to clean up after the lazy morons who leave their trash out there. It is no wonder the locals like Art don't want people out there if they don't respect the place. I would be a grumpy old guy as well if I had to deal with disrespectful people out there and people who decide they want to venture off on private property areas.. That was my first trip to Blackstar Canyon of what I hope will be many more in the future. When you venture out there try to be polite to the locals and bring a trash bag with you to clean up after the morons who don't care. I'll bet Art Tuttle will be a lot nicer to you if he sees you picking up trash. Also, I checked out his comments about Blackstar Canyon Falls being on private land and it turns out he was right. Fortunately the owners of the land don't mind if people go hiking there as long as they are respectful of the area. While I have heard many stories about Art, I can say he propbably would be a whole lot nicer if everyone had a little respect for the use of the area.

Black Star Canyon is on private land, BUT the city has an easement on that property that allows public use. Which means Art Tuttle has no say in who uses the road. Second; why are you trying to have Art 'Like You' or be nice to you? Why would you stop and interupt his conversation? Just ride, bike, hike and be on your way. Ignore Art and the other locals if you can. They live in the hills for a reason!

Max you are stupid. If you are a complete b*tch to Art he'll most likely go crazy on your ass and do something. It's obvious you should respect him no matter how nuts he is. I say bring a trash bag and clean up.

Hi I am a new member. My boyfriend and I have been going to the Santa Ana Mountains since he introduced it to me in 2003. I went up there in my Geo Metro one day against his advisement to go alone and had an encounter with two guys who looked to be in their late teens or twenties. It just so happened they drove the same make and model car, but different color I was driving. I thought that was strange. They scared the crap out of me. They had guns, I thought they were going to kill me. They driver pulled up alongside me and said, "Sorry we didn't mean to scare you. We were just hunting wabbits." Anyway, that has been my only negative experience up there. My boyfriend and I used to go up there at night all the time and look at the city lights. Its really a beautiful place to hike and take pictures. Though I have never met locals, Arthut Tuttle or Wild Bill, I would like to. My boyfriend has met Tuttle and said he wasn't very nice to him. He was probably on his territory. Our last trip to Blackstar Canyon, we popped off at Tuttles' place. We saw the bus and were looking around. I felt guilty for tresspassing and wanted to leave. I have always been fascinated by the Santa Ana Mountains and keep coming back. Quite a lovely place.

Julie -- I'm currently shooting a documentary about Blackstar Canyon and am seeking interview subjects. I'm focusing on the history, legends, residents, visitors, etc - basically anyone with interesting stories about Blackstar. Would you and your boyfriend be interested in being interviewed for the film? Shoot me an email at alincoln81@gmail.com if you are.
Thanks,
Andrew
