Got this message today from a mountain biker who did not leave a valid return address.

This web site is ridiculous...as an avid mountain biker in the
area....all you are doing is causing grief for our use, and you're
going to piss off the one resident up there with a gun who will kill
one of these retarded kids for snooping around. Grow a fucking brain.

As many of you know we only advocate legal use of the public lands. It seems this gentlemen has unfortunately missed this underlying message behind the site. I would be happy to talk to this individual, over e-mail or in person, about his concerns if he would please contact me again with a proper return address.

See you in the canyon ;)

I checked the IP on the e-mail and it was sent from an individual at Santiago Community College.

I didn't send the letter, but I can translate.....

I've regularly mountain biked up Blackstar over the past few years. I've done well over 40 night bike rides to the top of the mountain & back down. I don't want to burst the site's bubble, but there's nothing haunted about the area. I've never seen anything paranormal. The creepiest thing I've seen is the glowing orange eyes of a bird sitting in the trail.

I have, however, seen a steady stream of teenagers hiking in the area looking for haunted stuff.

Let me back up for a second....the biggest problem we have in the area is an ongoing battle with the resident, Art Tuttle. He will regularly place things in the trail to try to discourage people from going up the hill. He is crazy. He has a gun. Not a good combo.

....so, web sites like this that promote the "haunted" nature of Blackstar bring the teenage ghost hunters, which pisses off Art, which makes things more difficult for the mountain bikers.

In addition, there has been a marked increase in graffiti and other vandalism in the area. It isn't fair to assume that the ghost hunters are causing the destruction. However, I do think you would find that there's a much greater chance of a teenage hiker causing destruction, than there would be with an older mountain biker.

Finally, the more trouble in an area, the greater chance it will be shut down to nighttime use. It would be best if Blackstar stayed below the radar and didn't become a teenage hot spot.

Mountain bikers just want to bike in peace and enjoy the scenery.

You make a lot of good points.

In addition, there has been a marked increase in graffiti and other vandalism in the area.

I've hiked Blackstar on foot during the day and at night quite a bit during the last four years and have unfortunately always noticed graffiti.

What frustrates me a little is that all the people I have met in person and talk about Blackstar with have been responsible and good people. The bikers, hikers, and ghost hunters all want the best for this natural resource. Hell, I'm a member of the Sierra Club.

Finally, the more trouble in an area, the greater chance it will be shut down to nighttime use. It would be best if Blackstar stayed below the radar and didn't become a teenage hot spot.

Mountain bikers just want to bike in peace and enjoy the scenery.

And this is exactly what the hikers and ghost hunters want too. You would not believe all the extremely hateful and mean-spirited e-mail get from bikers. I question at times how people this mean can really care about the canyon.

Art has always been a problem and will continue to be such. In my only personal encounter with the man he tried to run me over.

I guess I just disagree that Blackstar should be a kept a secret. I started this website because I wanted to share with others what I was enjoying. Popularity might come with a price but I would back down if I ever saw it as becoming a problem. I am in the canyon hiking on a regular basis and I don't ever see people causing trouble. I know not everyone is responsible in their actions but I think most are.

I would just like to point something out so we can settle this, I have hiked up blackstar over 8 times already and did go mountain biking up there a few times too. On the note if the canyon is haunted or not, No i dont believe it is, In fact i think its a waste of time if you just go up there hoping to see ghosts. I remember last year i went hiking with my buddys and one of them acctually brought his pellet rifle, Shootin trees and stuff, In the end it just resuslt the OC Sheriffs department almost arresting all of us for just snoopin around. And above all that its not safe for kids to go there snooping around, there are dangrous people up there that may harm you, Why when we were let go the cops said we have to be carful because a couple just last week from that day almost got killed by a number up people that where just hiking up the canyon, The women was threatined but unharmed but the Man was not so lucky, he was almost beatin to death.

So please, quit this BS about it being haunted, I was thought it was but now i know its a load of crap.

Well, I believe that if you go there expecting to find nothing, then nothing is what you will find. Also be aware that some people are more susceptible to paranormal activity than others. If you go in narrowminded and being skeptic about finding any ghosts or such things, then you most likely won't.

Dood i wasent skeptical at first, I Hiked for 2 hours up the canyon to where that suppose dreamcatcher is at (Btw if it was a dreamcatcher, its not anymore) ANd hiked back down in pure pitch black mayn. It wasent fun, I was the only one with a flashlight at the time but it was busted, So we hiked back down the canyon and to the car and it took use like 2 and half hours, My friends and I heard alotta weird shit like movment all around us but then again its the friggen wilderness, animals and shit are running around all the time especially at dark. So again, I recall my disbelieve on the canyon being haunted, I seen and heard alotta weird shit there, But nothing paranormal.

I was up about 2 weeks ago and was the victim of some rather hateful biker slander, as they rode by they insisted on calling out "Fag". I'm a geology student, I go to enjoy the natural erosion, and the learning experience. To believe that ghost hunters, and hikers are the root cause of Art's frustration is both rude and ignorant. I have watched several time as bikers dismount there bikes and piss on the surrounding objects, or throw there garbage onto the the dirt road. Of course to assume ALL bikers behave this way would be ass rude as the assumptions that hikers are all "teenagers" doing nothing more then causing trouble.
